A pattern 1912 officer’s uniform, khaki cotton, tunic and trousers. Tunic retains all buttons, held in place by split rings through eyelets, both hooks and keepers present on collar. Light weight, no lining, very good condition with no holes or tears, minor stains. Tunic has faded maker’s label inside, no names or size indicated. Matching trousers are in equal condition with all buttons intact. No labels or size, there is a name inscribed inside.
Tunic has the shoulder sleeve insignia of the 84th Division, (The Rail Splitter Division), comprised of dark red wool disc with applied white linen circle. Has an axe embroidered upon it, with Lincoln and 84 embroidered above and below. Interesting and attractive version of the original 84th insignia. Has officer insignia on standing collar, U.S. and 327 crossed cannons. Captain bars on the epaulettes, officer braid on the cuffs. One light blue for less than six months overseas chevron.
From the inscribed name in trousers, this may have been the uniform of Robert Kilby Elam, Sr., (1894-1985) of Richmond, Virginia. Calculated speculation for now with a good potential for more research.
