American Bakeries Co., 1930s <100 Shrs Specimen Stock Cert., VF-XF SBN Green. American Bakeries Company had its beginnings when Mike Molan and Tom O'Connor, salesmen for a baking company in Minneapolis, struck out on their own and opened a small bakery in Minneapolis in 1902 and called it the Chicago Bakery. In 1906 they purchased the Schwab Bakery, also in Minneapolis, for the purpose of making pastry. They kept buying up bakeries until 1953 when the name of the company was changed to American Bakeries Company. The company acquired Langendorf United Bakeries in May 1964 which expanded their market to the Pacific Coast. By 1971 American Bakeries Company operated forty-two plants in twenty-three states. In 1972 it claimed to be the second-largest bakery operation in the United States.
